Danny Keogh was born in Uganda and grew up on the Copperbelt in what was then Northern Rhodesia. He joined the South African Navy, moved on to work for Marine Diamond on the Namibian coast, did a stint as a diamond driller before auditioning for the Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal and landing a walk on in ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern”. He did a few small parts but didn’t enjoy the experience and drifted into stage management, working in the ballet, opera and drama departments.
While stage managing for Barney Simon he was asked to act as well. He agreed, on condition that he didn’t have to speak. The production was “Woyzeck”, he played the “Drum Major”. He acted in a few more plays for PACT before resigning to join Mannie Manim and Barney who had formed “The Company”.
“The Company” performed in various venues around Johannesburg before getting a permanent home at the ”Market Theatre”. For the first few years at the “Market” he stage managed, ran the lights, helped build dressing rooms, painted walls as well as acting. After his first Best Actor nomination for the play “Bodies” he concentrated on the acting and has won many awards over the years.
When television arrived he appeared in one of the first local productions “Matiwanes Gold”. Regardt van den Berg was also in the series. He has worked consistently in both film and television since the early seventies.
